Wrest Point

A hotel tower on the River Derwent with restaurants, bars and live music at one address. It opened in 1973, and the venue describes itself as Australia's first casino.

The place

Wrest Point stands on the Sandy Bay waterfront, 3 km from the centre of Hobart by the venue's own account. It had its gala opening on 10 February 1973. The site is older than that: an inn was built here in 1839 and later became the Wrest Point Riviera hotel.

The venue calls its tower Tasmania's tallest building. On the 17th floor, The Point Revolving Restaurant looks out over the river. A walking path runs around the property, along the foreshore and lawns to the boardwalk.

Parking is free for everyone visiting, including a multi-storey undercover car park. The venue also has its own pier.
