Island escape

Tasmania: a mountain, a harbour and a tower on the river.

Fly in, spend the day between the waterfront and the mountain, and finish at Wrest Point on the River Derwent.

Who it suits

This is a trip for people who like a compact city with the outdoors on its doorstep. Hobart's sights sit close together, and the evening is one address: Wrest Point in Sandy Bay.

Stay inside the complex if the night out is the point. Stay in Battery Point if Salamanca is your daytime base and you are happy with a longer walk.

Getting there

  • Flying is the easiest way in. Flights arrive daily from several Australian cities, and Melbourne is about an hour away.
  • Hobart Airport is 18 km from the city. The SkyBus shuttle leaves every 30 minutes and makes six downtown stops.
  • With a car, take the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Geelong to Devonport on the north-west coast.

By day

  • Salamanca Market fills Salamanca Place every Saturday from 8:30 am to 3 pm, with more than 300 stalls.
  • Battery Point, Hobart's first suburb, is reached from Salamanca Place by Kelly's Steps, built in 1839.
  • kunanyi / Mount Wellington rises 1271 metres above the city. The summit is a 30 minute drive from the centre, and the Explorer Bus runs up from the city. The road can close in snow and ice.
  • Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, is reached by its own ferry from the waterfront.
  • The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and many private galleries are spread through Salamanca and the city centre.
